Indigo 2.0 Workshop

Many of you have asked about techniques that take a bit longer to prepare and are interested  in an “advanced” session. That’s where INDIGO 2.0 comes in!

You can also take the 2.0 workshop, even if you haven’t done indigo at all.

In this workshop you will have 4 napkins to experiment on in a variety of techniques: shibori, arashi, batik and stitching are just a few!

We recommend tying/sewing 2 of your napkins ahead of time  and saving the other 2 for batik (wax resist) to do during the workshop. If you would like to do this, your napkins can be mailed to you ahead of time, with links for instruction.

There is no requirement to complete anything before the workshop, but the stitching techniques take longer to create, so they should be done before the workshop. If you just want to do the workshop as-is, that is fine too.

We have all the supplies you will need during the class. Just bring a bagged lunch and plan to get a little messy! Note: Indigo stains WILL. NOT. COME. OUT. Please dress accordingly. $125 Registration details can be found here: https://osamequinfarm.org/events-calendar/indigo2

  • Google Calendar ICS

Shibori and Scarves

A 6 week exploration. Classes run from October 31 to December 19 with no class on November 14 and November 28.

Explore the rich tradition of shibori, an ancient Japanese textile art dating back to the eighth century. This dyeing technique involves stitching, binding, folding, twisting and clamping fabric to create one-of-a-kind patterns and textures.

You'll learn about the unique properties and chemistry of indigo, a botanical pigment that can be used to create designs as individual as the clouds in the sky. You'll be introduced to several shibori methods, including arashimokumenui and itajime, by first making small samples to understand the basics. These will serve as reference points as you move on to dye larger pieces.

Next, you’ll stitch cotton and silk scarves, then immerse them in dye baths. You'll finish by opening your stitched scarves to reveal the intricate, unique patterns that make shibori such a captivating and versatile art form.

Please contact the RISD CE office at 401-454-6200 to register for this course.

COME JOIN A ZOOM WITH US & The Weaving Way

Join us for a talk with Kate Kilmurray from The Weaving Way. With the increasing understanding of how this over-digitalized world is affecting our mental and physical health, the vital importance of traditional arts and techniques as an antidote is becoming increasingly apparent. With more people looking to hand weaving as a means to reconnect with their creativity, it feels a natural step to create a community among those of us who practice this technique to allow us to support one another. The Weaving Way Community is a free group which meets once a month via Zoom to allow practitioners from all over the world to come together and share stories. A safe space where weavers can feel connected to their peers, the community is open to all levels of hand weaving experience who would like to meet with others and share their creative process. Come join Cathy and Mark for a discussion about their journey into indigo. FREE

BOSTON, MA GATHER ART SYMPOSIUM Make-and-Take Workshop

This event is hosted by Cloth Collaborative in Boston, MA. Learn the basics of Indigo dyeing with Cathy Wilkerson of The Indigo Squirrel. Exploring a variety of techniques, you will create a set of 4 hand-dyed cotton napkins. These make excellent gifts! Traditional shibori, resist, and pole-dying techniques will be included with hands-on help.

After lunch Maggie Haaland will teach you the basics of natural dying with locally foraged plants, focusing on cultivated daffodils and wild nettles. This is a great way to use spent daffodils, which will just be ending their flowering season, by transforming them into a dye that yields vibrant yellow shades. Nettles, that hardy, common urban plant gives bright yellow to olive green shades. In this workshop, we will share and experiment with harvesting dye plants, preparing a dye bath, the mordanting process, and dyeing as a way to connect more deeply with the land around us. You’ll leave with the skills needed to experiment on your own, and with two beautifully dyed pieces from class.

Please bring a bagged lunch. This event will happen outdoors rain or shine. NO PREVIOUS SKILLS NECESSARY. Come have fun, get messy, explore and see what you can do!

This event is generously sponsored by the City of Boston and is free!! Space is limited please make sure you register by checking out.
